I Need Help

If you are a victim or witness of a discriminatory act related to hate speech or hate crimes, COOPERHATE, in partnership with APAV, the SOS Racismo Movement, ILGA, UREP, and law enforcement agencies, provides support resources for anyone who needs help or wants to help combat hate speech and hate crimes.

The Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV)

APAV—the Portuguese Association for Victim Support—provides free and confidential support to victims of all types of crime, offering emotional, psychological, legal, and social support, while also providing protection and information to victims. On APAV’s official website, you’ll find comprehensive information on what hate speech and hate crimes are, as well as what discrimination is, how it occurs, and its consequences. Here, you’ll also have access to legal information and guidance on what to do if you become a victim. The APAV website also offers reporting systems where anyone can report discrimination, hate crimes, and hate speech.

Services
  • Providing clear information about rights;
  • Legal support, including identifying instances of discrimination, explaining the legal framework surrounding them, providing information on the channels available for filing complaints, and assisting with the formal filing of such complaints;
  • Emotional and psychological support tailored to their experiences;
  • Practical support and monitoring of actions taken with relevant entities;
  • Referral and coordination with other agencies and services appropriate to the specific needs of each situation.

At any of these services, assistance will always be provided by a properly qualified victim support specialist.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Intervention

ILGA Portugal (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Intervention Association) is an NGO dedicated to defending the rights and promoting the social inclusion of LGBTI+ people and their families. ILGA’s official website provides access to various specific support services, such as the LGBTI+ Victim Support Service and the Psychological Support Service, designed to address issues frequently faced by LGBTI+ individuals and offer psychological support, respectively. The association also offers the LGBTI+ Helpline, a safe space where people can vent and/or ask questions anonymously and confidentially. It is also possible to report discrimination through the LGBTI+ Discrimination Observatory if you are a victim or witness of discriminatory incidents or crimes, as well as through the LGBTI+ Health Discrimination Observatory, created with the aim of collecting data on situations of discrimination experienced by LGBTI+ people in the healthcare context.
