The COOPERHATE project was represented at the 2026 edition of the ‘No Hate Speech Week’, promoted by the Council of Europe between 17 and 19 June, in Strasbourg.

The participation resulted from an invitation from the Council of Europe to present the work developed by the COOPERHATE partnership in strengthening multisectoral responses to hate speech and hate crime.

The presentation took place on 17 June, during one of the event’s parallel thematic sessions, and was delivered by Vânia Sampaio, Head of Unit for Security and Cooperation in Criminal Justice of the Radicalisation, Violent Extremism and Organised Crime Portfolio of IPS_Innovative Prison Systems, a partner organisation of the project.

The intervention presented COOPERHATE and its multidisciplinary approach to preventing and combating hate speech and hate crimes. Preliminary results of the identification and analysis of the gaps and obstacles that condition the effective implementation of hate crime legislation in Portugal, led by the University of Beira Interior, were also shared. The partnership was thus able to open the discussion on the need for more coordinated responses between public authorities, civil society organisations and other relevant actors.

The project was also represented at the event’s Networking Fair, dedicated to the exhibition of materials and the creation of links between organisations and initiatives that work on the theme under discussion. COOPERHATE was represented through the distribution of project information pamphlets and the IPS poster on its work and contribution to multisectoral, restorative and victim-centred approaches to the prevention of hate and extremism. The ISCTE partner, represented by Dr Rita Guerra, also presented a poster that highlighted some of the results already developed within the scope of the project, including the Red Flag Framework and the Manual and Glossary.

Organised around the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, ‘No Hate Speech Week’ highlighted the relationship between discrimination, hate speech and hate crimes and phenomena such as radicalisation and violent extremism.

The presence of COOPERHATE at this European meeting reinforced the dissemination of the partnership’s work and the exchange with other entities committed to understanding the dynamics that connect these phenomena and to developing common, structured and coordinated responses.
